The most significant military event in January was the Sudanese Armed Forces' (SAF) recapture of the city of Wad Madani after nearly a year of control by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This development marked a turning point in the conflict, enabling SAF to reclaim additional areas in El Gezira, Khartoum, and North Kordofan states. SAF also took the initiative to launch further attacks on RSF-held territories.
These shifts in the conflict have led to severe human rights violations by SAF and allied forces against civilians in El Gezira and North Kordofan. Reports indicate that some civilians were massacred and their bodies disposed of in the Nile under the pretext of alleged cooperation with the RSF. Such actions constitute grave violations of international law, which prohibits the targeting of civilians and underscores the necessity of upholding human rights at all times. Simultaneously, both warring parties continued engaging in arbitrary arrests, systematic torture, and shelling of residential areas.
Below is the January 2025 Report compiled by the Youth Citizens Observers Network (YCON) relying on primary and secondary data gathered by its local observers distributed across all states of Sudan, it reflects on social, economic and political implication of war, in addition to asylum and displacement movements, and the condition of the displaced and refugees in camps, from December 27, 2024 to January 26, 2025, in addition to our recommendations (we youth) to help resolve the Sudanese crisis.
